Nutrition is an important part of supportive care for people undergoing cancer treatment or bone marrow transplantation (BMT). During treatment, the body may require adequate calories, protein, fluids, and nutrients to help maintain strength and support normal body functions.

Some patients may experience nausea, appetite loss, changes in taste, mouth sores, or digestive difficulties. These symptoms can make eating challenging. Depending on the situation, healthcare professionals may recommend smaller meals, nutrient-dense foods, appropriate fluids, or other dietary strategies.

For BMT patients, nutritional care can be especially important because the body is recovering through different stages of transplantation. Food safety and hygiene may also require particular attention during periods when the immune system is weakened.

There is no single diet that is appropriate for every cancer or BMT patient. Nutritional recommendations should be personalized according to the patient’s diagnosis, treatment, laboratory results, medications, and overall health.

Working with the treating hematology or oncology team can help patients understand their nutritional requirements and make safe dietary choices throughout treatment and recovery.
